Large Antique Chinese Carved Lacquer Altar Table Qing circa 19th century. Black and polychrome lacquer surface with visible through-tenon construction. Hardwood, perhaps an identifiable variety such as zitan however difficult with lacquer to be certain of wood variety or level of density other than reasonably heavy to lift. Has two added Republic era drawers, at left and right under table surface on side of cabinet behind reticulated frieze. Drawers and interior drawer guides are of more modern and softer wood that has been stained. Main images have been taken with drawers removed, however they accompany the item and can be seen in a detail image. 46 inches h. x 93 inches w. x 19.125 inches d. Contemporary era Chinese text Art Furniture label verso.
Provenance: Palm Beach area collection.
Condition: Generally sound and attractive estate discovery condition. Lacquer shows craquelure lines at through-tenons and joints, etc. Scattered wear and flaking commensurate with age. Left lower through-tenon receding from left front leg that needs to be tapped back or re-set. Splitting to front right leg towards bottom. Likely lower back legs reworked - see angular cuts in detail image. As noted above, drawers on sides of item and their internal wooden drawer guides appear to be modern additions.
